In our previous blog 10 reasons to ride an electric bike, we discussed the many benefits of riding an eBikes. Nothing compares to the exhilarating sensation of riding an electric bike. You feel like a superhero: powerful, fully alive – practically flying! At Electric Bike Sales, “we love to give our customers superpowers.”

Electric bikes offer a green alternative to commuting. Riders travel further and faster, enabling many more to experience the joy of cycling.

E-Bikes are undoubtedly tonnes of fun and extremely practical; however, many ask can you get fit on an ebike?

Many aspects seem geared to performance gains in cycling, so electric bikes are often seen as providing little more than a helping hand on hills or a sweat-free commute. Yet, electric bikes can improve your fitness, and we have the science to prove it!!

A team of researchers from Brigham Young University in Utah monitored the heart rates of experienced mountain bikers using pedal-powered and electric mountain bikes.

After riding a six-mile study loop with 700 feet of climbing on an electric bike, their subjects had a heart rate of 94 per cent of what they had achieved on a non-assisted mountain bike, putting them comfortably in heart rate zone four.

This is your “Race Pace Zone” and is where you have burning muscles and lungs, and you can’t keep the pace up for much more than an hour. This zone is beneficial for people who do a lot of activities that involve hard but short bursts of effort, such as biking or track sprinting.

E bikes allow the rider to choose the level of assistance, so they really are the best of both worlds. You can take it easy, sit back and just enjoy a gentle ride arriving at your destination feeling refreshed and relaxed, or you can push yourself and enjoy an intensive workout.

How to get fit on an e-bike

  1. Start slowly

The ebike will take the peak exertion out of your ride, making it easier to ride further. It is better to start with shorter rides and easy routes first, rather than going too far if you are new to cycling or not quite as fit as you would kike to be.

More frequent, shorter rides will improve your fitness more than occasional epic rides. But, of course, you’ll also want to know your eBikes range before committing to a ride that might completely drain the battery.

  1. Plan your journey

If you’re new to cycling, begin with routes that aren’t too demanding. You can still push yourself on climbs even with a motor.

If you’re new to the sport of cycling, start slowly to gauge your fitness and the bike’s capabilities.

Start on flat terrain that won’t overexert you until you get a sense of your physical capabilities and the various levels of assistance the bike can provide for you, start on flat terrain that won’t overexert you.

  1. Choose a lower level of assistance

Once you’re comfortable with your fitness and the bike, you can lower the level of assistance the motor provides to get a better workout.

You might be able to comfortably ride on a flat road or a moderate hill with just minimal assistance or without using the motor at all. You will also extend your range by saving the top level of support for the steepest hills.

  1. Get enough rest

It is just as important to recover from an ebike ride as if you were riding a regular pedal-powered bike. However, you might find that a challenging ride on an ebike is just as tiring, especially if you have been able to ride for longer than usual on your electric bike.

However, because ebikes lower your overall effort level, you should be able to ride more frequently and more often, improving your long-term fitness.

  1. Enjoy yourself

Most importantly, riding a bike should be fun – and electric bikes are fun! – so enjoy yourself.

Bottom line: An electric bike can be an ideal way to get the fitness benefits of cycling and still provide assistance when needed, whether it’s to ride further, tone down the exertion of cycling, or assist on challenging terrain.
