Here are ten ways an ebike could make you happier, healthier and financially better off

Electric bikes are more popular now than ever, but what are the benefits of powered pedalling?

Regardless of whether you’re a complete newbie or a seasoned cyclist – from health and fitness to financial and environmental benefits, there are many reasons you might want to try an electric bike.

Electrifying your commute or powering up the best mountain biking trails and back down again is just a few of the benefits of riding an e bike.

Here are a few more:

Improve your fitness and Stamina

Like cycling a regular bike, riding an electric bike is scientifically proven to increase aerobic fitness levels.

Even though the effort required to keep you moving is less than on an ordinary bike, you will still need to exert significant energy to propel yourself along.

Research shows that ebike riders heart rates are more than 90% the level of non-assisted riders, but eBike riders actually perceive that they are putting in less effort. (See the study here)

Scientists at Brigham Young University monitored the heart rates of experienced mountain bikers riding eMTBs and standard mountain bikes.

In a 10-kilometre test circuit, participants riding electric mountain bikes reached 94 per cent of the average heart rate they reached when pedalling ordinary bikes.

According to the same researchers, riding an electric hybrid bike to work brings the most benefits of commuting by bike. Ebike riders averaged 89% of the mean beats per minute they recorded when riding a regular commuter bike.

Your muscles will grow stronger, and your cardiovascular system will be more efficient, meaning you’ll be fitter and healthier.

keep up with your mates

A significant benefit of electric bikes is the ability to keep up with faster riders, and if you want to… outpace them.

This enables less fit riders to enjoy riding with a group of people without feeling like they’re holding back fitter riders. It’s also great for family rides when abilities may differ.

As a result, exercise becomes a social activity — riders can chat with friends as they cycle. Electric bikes are also an excellent way for disabled riders to get out and about gradually improving their fitness.

Flatten even the steepest of hills

Hill climbs are the bane of all cyclists, and even if you love the challenge of a good incline, your speed is almost likely to drop below 15mph. When riding an eBike, the electric motor assists tired legs depending on the level of support you’ve selected. Once you’ve topped a climb, you’ll feel fresher, so you’re less likely to want to rest and more likely to continue.

Faster riding

You can ride faster on an ebike, no matter your fitness level, because eBikes accelerate faster and can climb hills more quickly.

A bike’s motor will cut out at over 25kph/15.5mph in most countries (the limit is 20mph in the USA), so if you’re already fit and riding a performance bike, you might find yourself riding unassisted. But unless your commute is entirely flat, your overall speed is likely to be quicker on an e bike. In addition, with the extra power from the e-bike’s motor, you can accelerate faster and with less effort from a standstill, making it much easier and less stressful to keep up with traffic at junctions and lights.

The perfect travel companion

An ebike can help you explore new places.

You should also be able to ride farther with an ebike.

Researchers analyzed health and transport data from seven European cities. They found that ebike riders took longer trips than regular cyclists, and the fitness level of ebikers is therefore comparable to that of pedal-powered cyclists. Ebikes’ range varies greatly, but many have the option of fitting a second battery to extend it. You can thus explore more of afar, while the assistance will enable you to climb climbs and traverse terrain that you might never have been able to otherwise.

Sweat free commutes

Thanks to the powered assistance commuting on an eBike is much easier, and you’ll arrive at work feeling much cooler than if you rode a non-assisted bike, so you won’t need to shower and change at work.

Less muscle strain

The extra assistance means less strain on your muscles and joints – especially on hills and when accelerating when the most effort is needed.

This means you will need less recovery time and fresher for your next ride. Electric bikes are beneficial if you’re just getting into cycling and maybe haven’t yet developed the strength in your muscles.

Less stress on the heart

Norwegian researchers found electric bikes place less stress on the heart when compared to riding a regular pushbike. (see the paper)

The electric bike smooths out the periods of more demanding exertion while the rider still gets an aerobic workout.

Improved mental health

We all know the benefits of exercise for our mental health. Even a light workout releases our ‘feel-good’ hormones known as endorphins. These ‘feel-good’ hormones help you relax, calm your mind, boost your mood, and help you to sleep better. In addition, cycling has the added advantage of being outside, which many riders prefer to a gym and makes social distancing easier.

You can relax and enjoy the surroundings while riding an electric bike. Ebikes usually make a faint whirr when they accelerate or climb hills; otherwise, they make little noise or any other kind of pollution.

So get on your eBike and enjoy the great outdoors!

An ebike is cheaper and……quicker

Ebikes are more efficient and less expensive than cars for short-to-medium-distance travel.

Ebikes do not need to be taxed to ride them, and although cycling insurance is a good idea, it will be much cheaper than insuring a car.

An ebike is often faster for urban trips, and the cost per mile is negligible compared to running a car. Importantly cycling is non-polluting, so it is better for the environment.

If you need to go for a quick shop, an ebike could be faster and cheaper than driving, and you won’t need to worry about finding parking or paying for it.

Ebikes are cheaper than public transport, take for instance the annual cost of a Transport for London Travel Card which a the time of writing this article is £2128. At Electric Bike Sales, we have lots of incredible commuter e bikes that are cheaper than an annual travel card, and with schemes such as Cycle to Work, you could see even more savings
