ELECTRIC BIKES FOR TALL AND HEAVY PEOPLE

The world doesn’t seem to be designed for people at the upper centiles of height or weight, does it? This can be a particular problem when you want to buy a bike or e-Bike. If you’re taller than average, you may find it more difficult to find a machine with a large enough frame, while recommended weight limits on many bikes can make it tricky for heavier riders to find a suitable model.

However, by following a few pointers, larger riders can find the perfect machine. You will probably want to look for:

  • -A more robust frame, which will be able to withstand greater forces
  • -Tyres with higher thread counts and stronger inner tubes, which will be less susceptible to damage
  • -Stronger, more durable brakes, which will offer greater control when stopping. Hydraulic brakes are definitely a good idea.

To make sure you are comfortable while riding, you will need to find a frame that fits your size properly. However, while this is important, other components are also vital in making sure your electric bike is just right for you. For heavier riders, experts suggest choosing a saddle that is wider in the rear, not in the middle; this will help avoid chafing and discomfort.

Handlebars are also a crucial part of a good fit. Ensure that they are high and wide enough, and check that the distance between them and the saddle is right for you. A good saddle will help your posture and riding position, making the whole experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

We stock a wide range of electric bikes that would be an excellent choice for tall and heavy people, as well as some accessories to help you find the perfect fit.

There are some great options from Haibike for taller riders too. The Haibike models have sub variants that run from 1.0 to 11 with specification generally rising through the sequence except where they switch from Yamaha to Bosch ebike systems. When this switch occurs the bike equipment specification usually drops before continuing to rise for the remainder of the sequence up to 11. Some seasons certain steps in the sequence are missed out so don’t spend too much time trying to find them 🙂

We also have a range of more durable e-Bikes, which would be ideal for larger cyclists.

By far, the best e-Bikes for heavy riders are probably unsurprisingly the most expensive and come with Bosch e-Bike groupsets, and you can see them here Riese & Muller.

The Riese & Muller Nevo3 Touring is perfect for female riders (since men are not the only people who may be larger than many cycles can support). Thanks to the low-step through, the Nevo3 high offers a high riding comfort level and a pleasant handling experience. It offers an optional DualBattery boasting up to 1,125 Wh, giving an extended riding range.

The Riese & Muller Multicharger and Multicharger Mixte models are certified up to 175Kg. With an optional passenger kit, cargo bags and a larger battery choice, you’ll be able to easily tackle long rides with the family.

Health Benefits

Yes, e-bikes require a greater investment than conventional bikes, and you may be wondering, “What are the health benefits of e-bikes and are they worth the investment?”. In recent studies conducted by Brighamham Young University (BYU), researchers noted that “test subjects completed the course an average of 12:40 minutes faster using the e-mountain bikes, with an average speed 4.1 mph faster than the conventional bikes.” The researchers also concluded that “e-bikes are capable of providing much of the cardiovascular health benefits that conventional bikes provide.

So what does this mean for you, the rider? Well, it means that even a cyclist with low levels of stamina and fitness can not only keep up with but overtake riders on conventional bicycles, all the while reaping the benefits themselves of cardiovascular exercise and still enjoying the ride. Don’t forget you may be eligible to take advantage of the cycle to work scheme, and at Electric Bike Sales, we also offer 12 months of interest-free credit, so your new electric bike is suddenly much more affordable.

Accessories

As we have already seen, the bike frame is not the only thing that makes an e-Bike suitable for the larger rider.

We carefully choose all of the saddles we sell, based on trials and customer feedback, to ensure that they give the right balance of comfort and support for the rider.

And we also offer a seat post designed to provide better rear suspension and additional back support without affecting the pedal stroke distance. This is particularly useful for taller and heavier people, reducing the likelihood of injury and back strain.
