Hopefully, you haven’t experienced the awful feeling of returning to where you parked your electric bike only to discover it has disappeared and what remains of your bike lock in pieces at your feet.
Here are a few simple yet cost-effective steps you take to keep your prized eBike off the criminal’s radar.
Never use only one lock
Use two different types of locks whenever you leave your electric bike, even for just a few minutes. It’s not that two locks make your bike twice as safe, but it still improves your chances of not getting your bike stolen for two main reasons: It takes a thief longer to do the work of stealing your bike, and it means that the thief is more likely to choose a different target.
Combine a U-lock and a chain lock, and if possible, use two different anchor points.

Take your battery with you
It’s simple, an electric bike with a battery is a much more attractive target than one without. The battery is one of the most expensive eBike components and presents a costly hassle for anyone other than you wishing to ride it. Leaving the battery on your bike means any would-be thief has both. If your battery is removable, it’s best to take it with you.
Take your bike inside
Even better than taking your battery with you is taking your whole bike with you to prevent it from being stolen. A lock can never be guaranteed to be theft-proof. Keeping your bike out of the reach of any would-be thief is the best way to keep it safe.
If you can do so, take your bike indoors. It’s safest there.
Don’t establish a predictable routine
There are two types of bike theft: opportunistic thefts and targeted thefts. The first is where a thief stumbles upon an easy target and decides to go for it. The second is where a thief watches a proposed target for days or weeks and plans the attack method and timing to produce maximum results.
If you have to lock your eBike outdoors, you should always mix it up by parking different spots, even if it means walking a couple more minutes to your destination. If you have different locks, use them. Make sure there is no discernible routine.
Personal security is just good sense. If possible avoid taking the same daily route. Avoid stopping at the same coffee shop every day at the same time. Don’t establish a predictable routine that can make it easy for an attacker to profile and victimise you. And that goes for your bike and double for you.
Install an e-bike tracker
GPS trackers can be easily hidden on bikes to prevent them from being permanently lost should your bike be stolen. Many of them are cleverly disguised as bike parts. So it’s likely that even a thief looking for them wouldn’t find them.
