Boris Johnson announced in November 2020 a new government Green Plan calling it a “Green Industrial Revolution” one of the major reforms in the new plan is a pledge to end the sale of petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030, and a ban on the sale of hybrid vehicles in 2035.

Nine years may seem like a long time away, but think back to the London Olympics and the fantastic opening ceremony? That was in 2012, nine years ago!! Time flies, so now is the time to start making plans for the future and how this will affect your business.

E-commerce has revolutionised how we shop, with an estimated 97% of the UK population making an online purchase in 2020. The problem is that the way we transport and deliver goods has not changed and cannot sustainably keep up with E-commerce’s massive growth. The already congested UK streets have seen a 48% rise in the use of light goods vehicles over recent years, accounting for around 30% of the UK’s emissions.

Why the need for alternative transport methods?

  • -Increased transportation costs in inner cities due to congestion charging
  • -Greater demand for smaller frequent deliveries
  • -A massive increase in the need for same-day express delivery
  • -The average vehicle speed in London is just nine mph, and other cities falling by 20%
  • -The need for companies to be more sustainable, working towards being carbon neutral
  • -Government initiatives to improve air quality

What do your customers think?

88% of consumers surveyed by Forbes would like brands to help everyone become more sustainable, and 96% would be willing to pay more for sustainable goods and services that make a difference to the environment.

The electric cargo bike revolution

The City of London charges a daily fee of £15 for most vehicles entering the Low Emission Zone, and with other cities such as Birmingham soon to follow suit. Businesses operating in inner cities need to make adjustments, but the good news is consumers are willing to help pay for it; on average, consumers are willing to pay 5% more for goods and services that are environmentally friendly. E-Cargo bikes offer huge benefits commercially; they quickly and easily navigate congested towns and cities and, being classed as bicycles, avoid the Low Emission Zone charges.

Electric cargo bikes are large electric-powered bicycles with a big storage area, usually situated at the bike’s front. Electric motors provide pedal assistance requiring less effort from the rider. E-assist Cargo Bikes are a versatile and highly effective means of transporting goods with ease and minimal environmental impact, helping businesses become more efficient, saving money, and becoming more sustainable.

Is an electric cargo bike worth the investment?

Next to ordinary bikes, e-cargo bikes may seem expensive. But compared to the price of a new van and factoring in running and maintenance costs, insurance and tax etc., E-cargo bikes are much cheaper to run than vans, making an excellent choice for UK businesses, particularly for zero-carbon last-mile delivery.

Electric cargo bikes are fully tax-deductible for UK businesses, do not require a licence or road tax, no parking costs or fines, minimal running costs (charging the battery and servicing), and able to cover 50 miles on a single charge.

The cycle courier service Veload based in Nottingham was awarded over £11,000 in grant funding to expand its fleet of cargo bikes from Nottingham City Council, broadening its zero-carbon last-mile delivery service in the city.

Veload’s founder, John Faye, said, “We are passionate about the role cargo bikes can play in providing businesses delivering across Nottingham’s city centre with an option of moving their goods in an eco-friendly way that cuts emissions and alleviates congestion in the city.”

Nottingham City Council’s portfolio holder for Transport, Councillor Adele Williams, said: “Our Workplace Travel Service offers support to help local businesses make greener transport choices, and it’s brilliant that companies like Veload are using innovative carbon-free methods to deliver in the city. The pandemic has changed the way many businesses have to operate, and as people have stayed at home, there has been an increased demand for deliveries. It’s great to see Veload offering courier services that can support other Nottingham businesses to reach their customers in this difficult time without harmful emissions or increasing traffic.”

Studies have shown that cargo bikes can be more efficient and improve a company’s image, making consumers more likely to make repeat purchases from businesses that are sustainable. When considering the cost-effective benefits, positive reduction in carbon emissions and flexibility and efficiency, electric cargo bikes are worth serious thought.
