A Clean Air Zone charging polluting vehicles, including cars and vans, for entering the heart of Birmingham launches today (01/06/21)- many claim it will hit the city’s poorest drivers.
Today will see drivers of the most highly polluting vehicles charged for driving in parts of Birmingham city centre.
The Birmingham Clean Air Zone (CAZ) will affect 100,000 vehicle owners. Critics of the scheme claim the financial burden will fall on younger and lower-income drivers.
However every year, the City Council says pollution contributes to the premature deaths of up to 1,000 people in Birmingham through conditions such as heart and lung disease and cancer.
A cleaner Birmingham City Centre, is undoubtedly much healthier for those that live and work in the city and one that’s far more attractive to residents and tourists.
The Zone will cover all roads within the A4540 Middleway Ring Road, not including the Ring Road itself. However, it does include the A38 and tunnels. Drivers will be charged daily, and the zone will be in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Over 300 signs have been put up to tell drivers they’re approaching the Zone. Vehicles that do not meet the required emission standards will be detected by ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras. The Charges are as follows:
- Cars, Taxis and LGVs – £8 daily
- Coaches, Buses and HGVs – £50 daily
A day runs from midnight to midnight, and during that time, drivers can come and go from the Clean Air Zone and only be charged once. Drivers can pay six days in advance and six days afterwards online or over the phone. With a fine of £120, reducing to £60 if paid within 14 days.
Birmingham city council have given a two year exemption if you live in the clean air zone, and a one year exemption if you work in the clean air zone and earn less than £30,000, also anyone who comes into be vaccinated or visiting the Children’s Hospital won’t be charged.
E-Bikes to the Rescue
With vehicles that meet Clean Air Zone standards costing tens of thousands of pounds and financially impossible for many people, Electric Bikes are worth serious consideration. Consider a few of the benefits of eBikes:
- Cheap running costs
- Low maintenance
- Zero carbon emissions
- Eco-friendly
- Reliable
- Assisted Pedalling (No sweaty commutes)
- No parking fines
- No city congestion charges
Cycle to Work Schemes such as the Green Commute Initiative, where you could save up to 47% of the cost of a brand new electric bike and Interest-free repayments, mean E-Bikes are a lot more affordable a realistic alternative to cars.
