Who is Gates?

Gates Corporation is a company based in the USA and one of the world’s largest suppliers of belts and drive systems for automobiles, two-wheelers, transportation and materials handling. The Carbon Drive was developed by Gates specifically for use on bicycles and was launched in 2006 as the first product of its kind.
What is a Gates Belt Drive?
Gates belt drives are a type of bicycle transmission system that use a belt instead of a traditional chain to transfer power from the pedals to the rear wheel. Gates belt drives offer several advantages over traditional chain drives, including greater durability, reduced maintenance, and smoother and quieter operation.

There are two over-arching technologies of Gates belt drives for bikes: CenterTrack and Carbon Drive.

- CenterTrack Gates Belt Drive: This type of Gates belt drive features a center rib that helps to keep the belt in place and reduces the risk of the belt slipping off the CenterTrack sprockets. CenterTrack Gates belt drives are available in CDX, CDC and CDN versions, with CDX being the higher-end option designed for more demanding applications such as electric mountain biking or adventurous touring.
- Carbon Drive Gates Belt Drive: This type of Gates belt drive uses carbon fiber as the reinforcing material for the belt, which makes it lighter and more durable than chain drives. The carbon fibers are spun into a flexible cord like structure (carbon fiber tensile cords) which are able to withstand huge linear forces while maintaining a low stiffness and high flexibility.

Is a Gates Belt Drive better than a bicycle chain?
Here are some of the advantages of belt drive bikes:
- Quiet: Belt drive bikes are much quieter than chain drive bikes. This is because there is no metal chain to grind against the gears.
- Clean: Belt drive bikes are much cleaner than chain drive bikes. This is because there is no oil to drip on the frame or your clothes.
- Strong: The tensile strength of a Gates Carbon Belt Drive is up to 250 MPa (36,275 psi). This is significantly higher than the tensile strength of a typical chain, which is around 100 MPa (14,500 psi). The high tensile strength of a Gates Carbon Belt Drive is due to the use of carbon fiber tensile cords in the belt. These cords are very strong and can withstand a lot of stress.
- Durable: Belt drive bikes are very durable. The belt is made from a strong, lightweight material that is resistant to wear and tear. The carbon fiber tensile cords combined with Polyurethane and nylon make the belt very durable and resistant to wear and tear.
- Low-maintenance: Belt drive bikes require very little maintenance. There is no need to oil the belt or adjust the gears as frequently….if at all.

How strong is a Gates Carbon Belt?
