York City Council has been awarded £133,040 from the Department for Transport to offer York residents the chance to try an e-bike before choosing whether to buy one at a discounted price.
Lauched on the 19th of July the ‘E-Cycle Switch’ scheme, offers anyone that lives, works or studies in York the opportunity to lend an eBike from a participating local bike shop and ride it for 7 days with no obligation to purchase. Once the trial is complete, scheme participants will be eligible for a £300 discount off electric bikes at participating bike shops.
The scheme welcomes participants with disabilities or mobility issues to try an inclusive e bike best suited to their mobility and accessibility needs. The trial duration is subject to availability, and ranges from 1 to 7 days. For those who are qualify, an £800 discount will be available after their trial.
Longer trial and higher discount rates are available for those either currently seeking employment or starting a new job having been unemployed. Job seekers will be able to trial an e-bike for up to 4 weeks (subject to availability) before considering purchasing one with a £600 discount, if they do decide to go ahead.
Executive Member for Transport and Deputy Leader, Cllr Andy D’Agorne, commented;
Electric bikes present a great chance for those who are not yet confident to cycle regularly and those considering cycling for longer commutes and journeys.
“This trial will empower residents to make an informed decision before considering whether or not an e-cycle is right for them, and to get a taste of this unique and enjoyable way to get around.”
How to take part in the E-Cycle Switch scheme
Taking part in the E-Cycle Switch scheme couldn’t be easier, just apply, try then choose whether you want to buy your electric bike.
How to Apply
Sign up for your free e-bicycle trial using the iTravel website: E-Cycle Switch.
Your chosen bike shop will then contact you to make sure the e bike is set up just right for you and to arrange your collection date.
Try
Collect the e-bike from your chosen bike shop and try it out completely free for the duration of the trial.
Buy
There’s no obligation to buy an e-bike, but after your trial is complete you will be entitled to a £300 discount on a new e-bike from a participating retailer. Some residents may be eligible for a larger discount.
