When it comes to electric bikes, Porsche does not just dabble. Porsche has not only launched its own line of electric bicycles, but now we’re hearing the automaker has bought up yet another company in the e-bike industry, as well.

Porsche’s e-bike strategy: Buy, buy, buy

Fazua Logo

This time Porsche has eyed up a fellow German manufacturer, Fazua. Since 2013 Fauza have built a reputation for producing lightweight, compact drive and battery technologies. Currently, Fazua employs over 100 people, and over 40 electric bike brands, including Lapierre, use their technology. The Fazua system is lighter than most e-bike motors and designed to feel natural and seamlessly integrate with the cyclists’ riding style and can also be removed from the bike if riders want to go it alone altogether.

Fazua Electric Bike Motor

The Fazua Energy Ride System is designed to allow for energetic riding whilst keeping the natural feel of cycling. It weighs only 4.6 kg, is frame integrated and has no mechanical resistance when coasting or exceeding the motor’s legal speed limit.

Under the deal, Porsche buys an initial 20% ownership in the company for an undisclosed amount, with the option to purchase additional shares to become majority owners.

Porsche announced a strategic partnership with Dutch investment company Ponooc, a leader in sustainable energy and mobility solutions.

Porsche will use the acquisitions to create two joint ventures. First, Fazua will help it build “a future generation” of high-quality Porsche-branded e-bikes. Meanwhile, it hopes to collaborate with Ponooc to get better traction in the micro-mobility market, which it describes as “fast-growing.”

While electric bicycles are Porsche’s newest electric focus, they are far from the brand’s first. Porsche presented its first electric sports car, the Taycan, in 2019. Almost 40% of the Porsche cars Porsche delivered in Europe last year were either all-electric or hybrid. That figure was nearly 25% worldwide.

Last spring Porche also unveiled two mouthwateringly expensive eBikes, the Sport and the Cross. Designed for everyday use, the Sport features a full-suspension carbon fibre frame, integrated front and rear lights, a Shimano mid-drive motor. The Cross is intended for off-roading adventures. As well as Shimano mid-drive, a carbon fibre frame, and full suspension, the bike also comes with Magura-MT Trail hydraulic disc brakes that are extra-large and “heat resistant.” Of course, both bikes come with a price tag that would make even Jeff Bezos blush.

Our verdict

It certainly is exciting to see another household name enter the electric bike market. With the engineering expertise and financial backing of a company such as Porche, we will undoubtedly see incredible technological advancements over the coming years as electric bikes become ever more mainstream.

As of writing this article, most of the Porche eBikes were out of stock, so if you are in the market for a premium eBike, then check out these bikes from award-winning manufacturers:
