Jumping your eMTB is one of the best feelings ever!

Anyone one can get air time if they know-how and approach it correctly. There’s no magic trick to Jumping; anyone can go big with the proper technique.

Bike Set up

If you’re going to be jumping your e-bike, there are a few changes that you need to do from your regular trail riding setup.

If you’re solely focusing on jumping increase the tire pressures to around 35 to 40 PSI, this is going to give more a predictable take-off, and it’s not going to squirm if you have a bad landing.

Next, you’ll need to stiffen up your suspension if you’re riding a full-sus around 20% sag in the rear shock. You want that bike feeling nicely balanced, front and rear, so stiffen the front suspension as well.

Lastly, it’s a good idea to drop your seat out the way; this is going to give you a lot more manoeuvrability.

What to Learn First Before Jumping

Learning the fundamental skills of electric mountain biking makes it much easier for you to improve your overall technique. You are also less likely to crash and suffer injury.

Here are some skills you need to learn:

Manual

Performing a manual is just like doing a wheelie, but instead of pedalling, use your whole body to lift the front of the bike. This is an essential skill to learn for Jumping since manuals have many practical purposes for eMTBing.

Bunny hop

You need to learn how to jump on flatland before hitting jumps like tabletops and doubles.

When you bunny hop, both wheels are lifted off the ground in order to get over obstacles rather than slowing down. Jumping is doing a bunny hop over obstacles which will give you more air time.

Jumping is all about exerting pressure and your ability to control the timing of this pressure through each wheel. How to jump a mountain bike

Jumping is all about exerting pressure and your ability to control the timing of this pressure through each wheel.

The take-off

Before hitting the lip of the jump, pump the bike by putting all of your weight on your feet. As you lower your chest, keep your weight central, over both wheels.

As you compress feel the force of the lip against your wheels.

It’s the same as bunnyhopping – you press down and then release your weight through each wheel.

The lip of a jump will provide your wheel with all the lift it needs to follow the trajectory of the jump.

This means jumping is less explosive than bunnyhopping – the idea is to use elbows, knees, and ankles to push yourself forward smoothly in an arc.

The weight transfer for this also needs timing properly. You must transfer your weight from your hands to your feet at the right time.

Imagine a line just past halfway up the lip of the jump – this is the point at which you need to begin pushing fully with your feet instead of your arms.

Don’t worry about getting it wrong your first few tries, Jumping takes practice!

Now you’re in the air!! Stay calm look where you will land, making sure your bike goes in the right direction. This puts your bike at the right angle and reduces the chance of you crashing.

Landing your bike

As you spot your landing, use your arms and legs to absorb the impact.

Weight transfer is also essential; try to place all your weight at the centre, making sure that your bike is aligned to the gradient of the landing before you come down and land both wheels simultaneously to get a smooth landing.

Jumping on a hardtail is easier than a full suspension, but you’ll get a harsher landing without that rear shock. Hardtails are also much easier to jump, requiring less effort to get your bike up into the air. You only need to compress the front suspension giving you more power to get the e-bike higher for longer airtime.

A few tips to know before Jumping

Use flat pedals

While learning how to jump, it’s best to use flat pedals rather than clipless pedals. This makes it easier for you to bail if something goes wrong. You also won’t need to rely on lifting the rear from the pedals stuck to your shoes.

Start small

Rome wasn’t built in a day. So practice your first few jumps somewhere safe, so you don’t hurt yourself if you have a terrible landing, even if you come up short or overshoot. It’s best to start by learning on a tabletop jump rather than a double because you’ll have a flat, safe area to land on if you mess up. Remember, don’t go too big too soon!

Play around

Learning how to jump means finding the right style that suits you best. You already know the gist of what you’re supposed to do; all you need is a bit of practice to get the right timing to pull it off.
