20,000 miles on an electric bike!

Not so long ago a car with 100,000 miles on the clock was considered pretty much at the end of it’s life. By then major (i.e. expensive) bits would be starting to let go and trips to the local garage would increase in frequency. Now it’s far from rare to see cars with 200,000 miles or more on the clock still going strong. In fact our own company Passat had managed 207,000 miles of lugging electric bikes, trade stand, batteries and flyers to events all over the UK before it got upgraded to a bigger van, but every switch and button still worked as new.

But what of bikes? Up until the advent of good quality electric bikes it wasn’t something most people gave much thought to. Unless your name happens to be Mr Wiggins or Mr Froome you’re unlikely to be clocking up five-figure mileages on your average pedal bike.

Now though, with decent quality electric bikes and long range batteries, there is the very real possibility to do big mileages on your electric bike.

A customer of ours Mr Yeomans recently came into our York store and bought a KTM Macina NuVinci. Not unusual in itself. It’s a great bike and has been a real hit with staff and customers alike this summer. What is perhaps (or at least hopefully given the subject of this article) more noteworthy is what the odometer read:

20,000 Mile Electric Bike

This I believe marks a turning point in the electric bike market. The good ones are not new inventions any more. They are already out there, and have been for some years doing stalwart service day in, day out. Taking people to work, travelling Europe, getting people out into the countryside. 20,000 miles on a bike is a long way. 20,000 miles in a car is a long way when you think about it. But the fact that we are at this point now means surely the 50,000 bike, the 100,000 bike and beyond are not that far away. They might already be out there. They say the first 150 year old has probably already been born. Who knows; perhaps the first 250,000 mile bike has already been bought too.

For sure no matter how far you are travelling on your electric bike it’ll be fun, you’ll be in control and you’ll probably get thinner and your wallet fatter!

If you’ve gone further than Mr Yeoman on your electric bike please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you. ebikeevents@gmail.com
