In 2016 Haibike brought us the worlds first full suspension fat bike and it just happened to be an e-bike which of course made it even better and an immediate hit.
Last year Haibike adopted part of a Gary Fisher speech where he referred to electric mountain bikes as 'THE NEXT BIG THING'. Well he couldn't have been more right. Electric mountain bikes also referred to as eMTB have taken Europe and North America by storm with eye watering sales growth.
Why have Bosch and Yamaha powered eMTB been so successful? See our article here.
At the very top of the mountain e-bike tree are Haibike. They spotted the difference electric assist could make to the mountain bike scene and they integrated the Bosch system in ways noone had seen before making it perfect for mountain biking. They've continued to innovate and stay ahead of the competition refusing to simply bolt a motor onto their bikes. When asked to improve on the 2016 models there are no end of innovative ideas - as you can see in the main image above each post it note stuck to the bike represents an idea for improving the rider experience for 2017.
Our York store manager John is an avid mountain bike enthusiast and currently loves the Yamaha drive system on the Haibike sDuro AllMtn RX. We are sending him to Germany for the Haibike 2017 Reveal this weekend and we will have all the details for you next week.
Haibike New Number Naming Scheme
numbers are to replace the model levels SL, RC, RX, Pro. Numbers 1.0 to 9.0 makes it very easy for consumers to know what level of specification is on board and therefore what punishment they can expect the e-bike to take while keeping them safely in the saddle.
Geometry Changes on All Models
Haibike eMTB bikes are evolving and every year the designs take steps closer to perfect motor integration so whatever the riding style and whatever the power setting the rider will feel in control, the geometry will allow the rider and motor system to feel like one unit hardwired through the bike frame.
eBike and None eBikes to follow same Naming and Decal Schemes
Haibaike have decided to merge the name and colour schemes so that their electric and non electric models look the same. eBike specialists sell the vast majority of Haibike electric bikes so this is unlikely to cause confusion for consumers but will hopefully help to avoid the delays and production issues experienced during the huge increase in e-bike models during 2016.
Yamaha New 500Wh Battery
Haibike launch 2017 Haibike/Yamaha models with a 500Wh battery as standard matching Bosch but offering it with their standard system rather an optional upgrade for OEMs. The Yamaha motor will also be lighter than last year and include a higher level of power and a new clutch system to 'drastically reduce backlash'. Haibike will launch the Yamaha PW-X motor system. For more information regarding the Yamaha PW-X motor see here.
More Powerful Yamaha PW-x Motor
Yamaha and Haibike are launching the new PWx motor system offering more power despite being lighter and smaller. PW-x is designed to fit into eMTB frames allowing for better integration and protection of the motor. PW-x is 380 grams lighter at 3.1Kg and brings a 320% assist boost and up to 80Nm of torque.
Yamaha New Integrated Display
OK so you've had a fall and you've broken your display This can be an expensive accident and it does happen and both Yamaha and Bosch have responded to this issue, Bosch with a smaller display and Yamaha by integrating the display right into the bike stem. This is exclusive to Haibike and will no doubt improve the protection for the display. It is important to note that the stem cannot be changed limiting the potential for customisation. In our experience few customers change the stem.
Haibike Yamaha eConnect
Haibike have a closer working relationship with Yamaha than any other bike manufacturer. Because of this Haibike have been able to create eConnect which takes some of the more popular functions of Bosch Nyon and adds a few innovative touches to bring the bike comfortably into the riders life. Haibike realise that e-Bikes are becoming one of the most important products people own and they want to know where they are, that they are safe and that they will help them connect to their world when they need to.
- will allow you to locate your bike on google maps - Bike Location
- notify you if your bike is being stolen - Anti-Theft
- notify selected people if you have a crash - Emergency Function / crash detection
Bosch Purion Display
Not all of the Haibike xDuro 2017 models will have the new Bosch Purion display with integrated thumb control. This is due to some manufacturing delays at Bosch. Good news for xDuro enthusiasts that still want the usb charging.
Trekking Models will have wheel sizes moved from 700c to 27.5" plus e.g. xDuro Trekking 27.5 Plus
xDuro HardNine will move to a plus wheel size 29" Plus
