Progress in Lithium Battery Technology As the electric vehicle (EV) and ebike market continues its rapid growth in both the US and the UK, some exciting news has recently been announced which will have a major effect on the industry. Researchers have developed a new battery system which will allow EVs to be recharged almost instantaneously.  This technology, dubbed the ‘Ifbattery’ by its creators, can be produced cheaply and is environmentally friendly. It uses a system known as a flow battery, but has been adapted to work without the membranes usually used in such units. T..

Electric Bikes for Tall and Heavy People

Electric Bikes for Tall and Heavy People

The world doesn’t seem to be designed for people at the upper centiles of height or weight, does it? This can be a particular problem when you want to buy a bike or eBike. If you’re taller than average, you may find it more difficult to find a machine with a large enough frame, while recommended weight limits on many bikes can make it tricky for heavier riders to find a suitable model.

However, by following a few pointers it is possible for larger riders to find the perfect machine. You will probably want to look for:

  • a stronger frame, which will be able to withstand greater forces
  • tyres with higher thread counts and stronger inner tubes, which will be less susceptible to damage
  • stronger, more durable brakes, which will offer greater control when stopping. Hydraulic brakes are definitely a good idea.

To make sure you are comfortable while riding, you will need to find a frame that fits your size properly. However, while this is important, other components are also a vital part of making sure your electric bike is right for you. For heavier riders, it might seem sensible to go for a wider saddle and experts suggest choosing one which is wider in the rear, not in the middle, to avoid chafing and discomfort.

Handlebars are also a crucial part of a good fit. Ensure that they are high and wide enough and check that the distance between them and the saddle is right for you. This will help your posture and riding position, making the whole experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

We stock a wide range of electric bikes that would be a great choice for tall and heavy people, as well as some accessories to help you find the perfect fit.

Electric Bikes for Taller Riders

We have several electric bike frames available in larger sizes for taller customers, making them a great choice if you are taller than average.

The Cube TouringHybrid EXC 500 and the Cube CrossHybrid Pro, both using the Bosch performance CX motor system, each have a range of up to 100 miles and come equipped with powerful hydraulic disc brakes. The two models are sold with different saddles, so you can choose which suits you best.

Some stunning options from Haibike, the Sduro Cross 4.0 and the SduroTrekking 5.0 offer the choice of a range of 80 miles, with a battery that reaches full charge more quickly (the 4.0) or a larger range with a longer charge time (the 5.0).

Electric Bikes for Heavier Riders

We also have a range of more durable eBikes, which would be ideal for larger cyclists.

Haibike’s Sduro Hardlife 4.0 is aimed at women (since men are not the only people who may be larger than many cycles can support) while their Sduro Hardseven 4.0 and XduroTrekking 4.0 incorporate Hydraulic disc brakes for added security when stopping.

Bosch eBikes suitable for larger riders are the Cube ReactionHybrid HPA SL 500 27.5, which has a great range and can be 50% charged in 2 hours, and the Gazelle HeavyDutyNL C7 HMB which is designed to be as strong and sturdy as it is stylish.

Accessories

As we have already seen, the bike frame is not the only thing that makes an eBike suitable for the larger rider.

We carefully choose all of the saddles we sell, based on trials and customer feedback, to ensure that they give the right balance of comfort and support for the rider.

And we also offer a seat post designed to provide better rear suspension and additional back support without affecting the pedal stroke distance. This is particularly useful for taller and heavier people, as it reduces the likelihood of injury and back strain.
