The SPARTA ION was proclaimed “Bike of the Year 2004” by an expert jury. Various criteria such as construction, innovation, design, riding characteristics and price/quality ratio formed the basis for evaluation.
The jury expressed its opinion that: “The ION Comfort is a bike with pleasant and natural pedal assistance.
It opens up a new dimension and is sure to appeal to a broad target group.”

The Sparta ION is a quiet, comfortable bike with very sporty looks and a weight of barely 25 kg. Depending on the amount of pedal assistance selected by the rider, a fully-charged battery pack has a range of 35 to 50 kilometres.
If the bike’s speed exceeds the legal limit, the motor smoothly cuts out automatically.

Introduction
The Sparta ION has been well received since its introduction in March 2003.
More and more consumers are plucking up the courage to switch to a bike with pedal assistance.
The feeling of ‘getting a bit of help’ is catching on and people are appreciating the advantages of cycling in comfort.

Propulsion
The ION is equipped with electronic circuitry that unobtrusively controls the electric motor.
Via a power sensor in the rear wheel hub and based on the selected amount of pedal assistance, the bike’s intelligent systems calculate the extra energy required from the electric motor and ensure that the motor supplies power, silently and continuously.
With help from easy-to-use computer software, the bicycle dealer can configure the bike and perform system checks when making repairs.

Operating display
The removable operating display mounted on the handlebar allows the cyclist to select the level of pedal assistance (eco, normal or power) and switch the lights on and off.
In addition, the display shows the cyclist how far he/she has ridden and how much charge remains in the battery pack.
When the ION’s owner removes the operating display from the handlebar, the pedal assistance is automatically locked out.
In addition to this ‘immobiliser', the ION is fitted with an AXA lock.

Battery pack
The long-life NiMH battery pack hidden inside the frame provides continuous 24-volt power. The battery pack is charged from a normal, domestic electricity socket and can be recharged even when it is not completely depleted.
The battery also feeds the efficient light set, so no additional batteries to worry about.
When the battery pack is depleted, the motor acts as a dynamo.
This means that the annoying dynamo on the front tyre is also a thing of the past.


Operating Display
Handlebar-mounted controls
Controlling the ION’s pedal assistance is easy with the display on the handlebar.
3 levels of pedal assistance
You have three different levels of pedal assistance to choose from, depending on the situation.
ECO – The first setting provides comfortable support at a constant cycling speed, enabling you to get the best yield from the pedal assistance for leisure cycling or travelling to work.
NORMAL – In addition to comfortable support at a constant speed, the second setting provides extra power when you set off.
POWER – The third setting provides the most power under all circumstances and is mainly suitable when cycling in more adverse conditions, so you need to put in much less effort when cycling against a strong wind.

Electronic Lock
The display is unique to each bike, so you are the only one who can ride your bike with pedal assistance. The display therefore functions as a sort of electronic lock, giving you even better protection against theft.

Anti-theft Protection
The display is easy to remove, so you can easily take it with you when you park your bike in town.

Lights
By operating the left-hand button on the operating display, you can also turn the lights on and off safely and easily. An icon on the operating display shows whether the lights are on or off.

Riding speed and Distance
As you cycle, the display tells you how fast you are going. In addition, the display shows the distance covered on the day in question, so you can always see how far you have cycled. You can reset this ‘distance today’ reading to zero if you wish. The display also shows the total distance ridden when you first switch the bike on, so you do not need to buy a computerised counter separately.

Integrated wiring
The motor measures your speed via the rotation of the rear wheel, so you can dispense with wires running down the front fork and a magnet in the front wheel.

Visible Battery Pack Status
As soon as the power is turned on, the charge level of the battery pack is shown on the display.
The charge level is divided into 4 segments of 25%.
When the battery pack is nearly empty, the last segment flashes.

Intelligent System
When you switch between support settings, the system takes care of this electronically so you don’t notice the transition.

Visible Recharging Status
When recharging the battery pack, you can monitor the progress on the display. This means you always know how full your battery is.

Malfunction Indicator
If fault occurs somewhere on your bike, the display gives a numbered error indication so that you can look up the type of fault in your user manual.

Display Continuously Active
The operating display is supplied from the battery pack, so it will always work. The only time that the display shows no reading is when it is not connected to the bike.

The battery pack is held out of sight within the frame, so the bike looks like an ordinary bike and is very reliable.

High Power Output
In addition to the batteries, the battery pack also contains electronic circuitry that greatly enhances the bike’s power output.

Lighting via Battery Pack
The battery pack supplies power to the lights, so the headlamp and the rear lamp come on simultaneously.

Easy to Charge
You charge the bike via a contact in the upper left-hand of the frame. The contact has a movable cover to protect it from dirt and water.

Intelligent Charger
You can connect the bike to the charger at any time. The bike automatically regulates the charging process, so you don’t have to worry about keeping the pedal assistance at peak performance.

Warranty
The battery pack is guaranteed for two years.

Rear Wheel
Compact Motor
The motor is small and hardly noticeable to the user.

Optimum Drive Efficiency
The motor is located in the axle of the rear wheel for maximum drive efficiency.

Noiseless Power Assistance
The bike uses a magnetic motor that has no mechanical resistance and does not produce any noise. Another advantage is that the ION is as easy to pedal as an ordinary bike when the pedal assistance is switched off.

Lights Always Work
When the battery is depleted, the motor serves as a power source for the lights. So you are never left in the dark!
