An intrigued local eyes up the goodies in our Camden Road / York Way, London shop.

The Electric Transport Shop was formed by Cambridge graduates Eddie Kehoe and Jamie McAlley to promote a clean and fun alternative way to get from A to B. The ever more traffic plagued city of Cambridge is experiencing a huge increase in toxic fumes, noise pollution and unhappy c.ommuters, not unlike most places in England. The benefits of embracing new and exciting technology in this way give us the chance for a cleaner, greener...and longer future, where we can spend more time with loved ones or being productive and less time in traffic.

If you live in any city in the UK you will be familiar with the levels of pollution and accidents caused by congestion and people trying beat the rush hour. 5 Years ago we were in your position: stuck in mind numbing traffic on a daily basis with no escape from the physical or mental issues this causes. Now we use 2 wheels to get everywhere and enjoy the additional time not spent queuing and priority parking where ever we go. Both Cambridge and Camden councils are installing more free charging bays for you to use so it is becoming more and more convenient for you to reclaim your life from the traffic queues. Electric cars can also take advantage of priority parking and free charging in Cambridge, Camden and Westminster.

Eddie & Jamie having never cycled before starting college in Cambridge are now both passionate about cycling and introduced the modern designs and technologies from electric bike manufacturers throughout Europe to the UK market where demand is growing rapidly.

The extra speed and range electric bikes give you and the low regulation and cost of electric bikes makes them the perfect alternative for the short commuter. Instead of sitting in an hour of traffic to travel 5 to 20 miles why not cycle that distance in 10 to 30 minutes with minimal effort? As this argument was making more and more sense to people in the UK the reputation of The Electric Transport Shop for honest, independent advice and great prices grew stronger and stronger. We are now the largest independent retailer of electric bikes in Europe.

We aim to constantly stay at the forefront of electric transport technology therefore we have expanded from the short commuter market to the medium distance commuter with the addition of electric mopeds and scooters. We will have our first fuel cell motorbike in the first half of 2009, this is quite exciting…literally! It will do 0-60mph in around 6 seconds.

To make sure we provide the best possible service, we set up a shop and workshop in Hope Street Yard, Cambridge. This location gives our customers the opportunity to relax and try the bikes out in an isolated, safe area. We service and maintain the bikes ourselves and every bike is rigorously tested before being added to our range.

We pride ourselves in having not only the largest range available in the UK, but also the keenest prices. We will beat any competitor's price by up to £10!

We must be doing something right. We have seen virtually all of our competitors go out of business. Companies such as Powascoots, ElectricBikesDirect, TheElectricBike.com, Brightbike, and many more....all while we had our heads down working hard to ensure we don't let our customers down. Now almost 5 years down the road and we have the best knowledge in the industry, we have consulted the Royal Mail on their purchase of 14,000 ebikes, we have designed the Claud Butler ebike, we are the sole supplier of ebikes to Halfords Cycle to Work Scheme. Not only all of those things but we are so customer focused that we are rolling out shops to be near to our customers and back them up with the services they need. Look out for a store opening near you.

As well as our electric bikes, we offer a comprehensive range of the best quality british built conventional bikes, and our range includes biking accessories (locks, hemets, lights, trailers, topboxes/baskets etc) and even the Twike - a revolutionary new electric car!

We pride ourselves on offering a personalised, tailored consultation with each customer.

Here is a recent article from a local Cambridge magazine:

I’ve heard many people say “times change” over the years and recently I’ve come across a small Cambridge company who encapsulate that saying in a very local and modern nutshell.

The electric Transport Shop are Jamie McAlley & Eddie Kehoe, two graduates of the colleges here. Both came to Cambridge in 1997 and have since graduated and pursued separate careers in finance and insurance. As their careers took them further and further from Cambridge they looked for a way to earn a living in the city and to ‘do something good’ for the place they love to live in.

They could see that Cambridge was suffering severely from traffic congestion and with more housing planned the problem could only get worse. Encouraging people to cycle or walk is never easy, but the company took inspiration from their technical backgrounds and decided to launch an electric transport company.

If you’ve been crossing a street or a road somewhere in Cambridge you may have witnessed a bike whizzing by without any noticeable effort by the cyclist, or may be you’ve been overtaken on the formidable climb over Mill Rd bridge by a pensioner making it look easy. The chances are they are riding a new breed of electric bike from Cambridge Electro-Motion.

Jamie and Eddie now have the widest selection of electric bikes in the UK. They are constantly developing their range to reduce the weight, increase the distance and effectiveness of the motor. ‘We saw the need to introduce good looking electric bikes that would appeal to more people, we now have electric bikes of interest to all ages from 14 upwards. We have also looked at the practicality of electric bikes and can supply them with child seats and child trailers and large top boxes’.

Eddie comments ‘Cambridge is made for cycling, it is by far the easiest, most timely and most cost effective mode of transport in this city. It is an environmentally friendly way to get around and electric cycling still allows the cyclist to get good exercise without sweat or fatigue’.

So times do change but not always for the worse. The Electric Transport Shop are an innovative and successful company on your doorstep. As well as electric bikes, they are now offering the Segway, electric mopeds and electric cars: the future has started.
